AFCI’s ministry in Spain has a direct connection with people in Chile who have lost their homes in the recent earthquake. Miguel Torres and Sarah Andrews (who are members of a church founded by AFCI Spain) recently moved to Chile to oversee a business they have in Curicó, Chile. Shortly after their move, the earthquake hit. Miguel and Sarah report that 20 families working for their company had their houses destroyed. The company is already working with them through company funds to rebuild their homes. However, many more people are also now homeless, and AFCI has a direct opportunity to contribute to the relief effort.
Sarah wrote to say, “a lot of people are now homeless and jobless, and although some things are getting back to normal (the main supermarket is open, most people now have water and phone service, and electricity is back in most areas) there are a lot of people who have lost everything. Robbery and looting are on the rise.
"Miguel met with the mayor of Curicó and told him that the Torres Company not only wanted to give the town €50,000 for rebuilding but also wanted to help in any other way they could. He also asked who (what NGO or group) was being most effective right now. The mayor told him that neither the town hall/local government, nor any other local organizations that he knew of would be capable to help right now. Therefore he asked if we could organize donations as we are able and spend and distribute that money ourselves. Curicó was badly damaged, but isn't really on the news the way other cities are. Still, there is a lot of loss.”
This is an opportunity that AFCI has to help an area of the world where the funds will go directly to point of need in a place where others are unable at present to help. Even small donations would go a long way as a single house only costs $3,200. If you are able to help, you can make a contribution in the USA or in Spain.
If you live in the USA, you can contribute through the AFCI website or by sending a check to the AFCI International Office (AFCI, PO Box 470, Tucker, GA 30085).
If you live in Spain, you can contribute directly to AFCI Spain National Office through a bank to bank transfer. (Caixa Galicia, Account # 2091-1170-12-3000000400)
