AFCI Ukraine

AFCI Ukraine is part of the Europe Region.

The AFCI ministry in Ukraine is led by Wally Vasylovych, who has been involved in helping with church plants in his region of the nation for many years.  Wally officially joined AFCI in 2009.  The Ukrainian ministry is focused on strengthening local churches across the country and helping them reach out to neighbors and friends.  This is accomplished primarily through the use of AFCI Lifeworks materials that were developed in Australia to reach a postmodern and post-Christian generation of Australians.  Through "Lifeworks Australia" thousands have come to know Christ.  In 2009, all the Lifeworks messages and materials were translated into the Ukrainian language, and Wally has a wide open door to train church leaders across the country how to use this evangelistic tool. You can read more on the Ukraine LifeWorks page.

In addition to Wally, Al and Alice Moore have a ministry in Kiev to an elderly generation of people who have been neglected by their society.  Many retired Ukrainians have come to Christ through the personal witness and Bible studies started by the Moores.  They are now partnering with churches in Kiev to build a retirement center that will care for the physical and spirutual needs of the elderly.

Nation Overview

During the 10th and 11th centuries, Ukraine was the largest and most powerful state in Europe.  During the later part of the 18th century, most of Ukraine was absorbed by the Russian Federation.  Ukraine had a short period of independence from 1917-20, but was reconquered and suffered through two famines (1921-22 and 1932-33) where over 8 million people died.  In WWII another 7-8 million people were killed.

Independence came again for Ukraine in 1991, but turmoil continued which led to the Orange Revolution in 2004.  Since that time the leadership of the nation has alternated back and forth between rival parties.  The present Constitution was adopted on 28 June 1996.

Ukraine is an oasis of religious freedom. The Orthodox Church continues to be dominant, but Baptists have opened more than 1,800 new churches. Other denominations are also very active.
